The Story Behind Stone Island

Stone Island began in 1982 when Massimo Osti built the label around textile experimentation rather than seasonal trends. Working from Ravarino in northern Italy, Osti pioneered garment dyeing along with reflective, heat-sensitive and resin-coated fabrics that had rarely been seen in ready-to-wear. The compass rose badge, fastened to the left arm and detachable by two buttons, became a marker of that research and remains one of the most recognised emblems in menswear. In 2020 the house joined the Moncler group, carrying its engineering-led approach into a new generation of wearers.
