Emilio Pucci, Marchese di Barsento (1914–1992), founded his eponymous label in 1947 after a chance encounter on the Swiss ski slopes, where his self-designed ski wear caught the eye of a Harper's Bazaar photographer. From his boutique in Capri and the family palazzo in Florence, Pucci pioneered a new kind of Italian luxury: unstructured, lightweight and joyously colourful. His kaleidoscopic prints — inspired by Sicilian mosaics, the heraldic banners of the Siena Palio and far-flung travels — earned him the enduring title "The Prince of Prints".
