The Vision Behind 1017 ALYX 9SM
Launched in 2015 by American designer Matthew Williams, 1017 ALYX 9SM takes its name from the most personal of references: 1017 marks Williams' birthday, October 17, while 9SM nods to the brand's first studio on Saint Mark's Place in New York City. Before founding the label, Williams built a reputation styling and designing for some of music's biggest names, bringing a sharp, subcultural sensibility to everything that followed.
The result is a wardrobe that marries luxury streetwear with high fashion, threaded through with the skate, punk and club influences of Williams' Californian and New York upbringing. The house became known for its industrial statement hardware, most famously the rollercoaster buckle inspired by theme-park safety harnesses, and for an uncompromising approach to advanced technical fabrics.
