Every HOKA shoe starts at the sole. Nicolas Mermoud and Jean-Luc Diard, both formerly of Salomon, wanted to descend faster, so in 2009 they built a shoe with far more foam than convention allowed and a rounded rocker profile that keeps the foot moving forward instead of braking. Ultra runners took it up first, Deckers Brands acquired the label in 2013, and the proportions have since become a look in their own right.
